Free Minds Free People Conference 2011

July 08, 2011 @ Providence, Rhode Island

Ahalia Persaud from New York's Global Action Project and  Joslyn Young from Pennsylvania's Voices for Change, participated in a Chain of Change workshop at Free Minds, Free Peoples Conference in Rhode Island.  During the workshop, Building Safe Communities, they created this video about how better student and teacher communication can create safer classroom environments. During the two workshops at the Young Chicago Author's Conference youth discussed how to define violence and analyze how mainstream media and music portrays violence situations in their communities. In the afternoon workshop youth developed anti-violence campaigns using their cell phones.

What you see is not always what you get. A Chain of Change workshop engaged youth at the Young Planners Network confernce. Youth planners are high school students engaged in urban planning, policy or action in their communities, either through a school project, internship, after-school program or community. Youth produced picture & text messages that were sent to their peers.

Wired Up

May 22, 2010 @ Roosevelt University (Chicago, Il)

A youth video letter to Chicago's Mayor Daley created during Beyondmedia Education's Wired Up Youth Media event. As part of the Chain of Change project, we held a youth summit, Wired Up: Youth Take on Violence at Roosevelt University in May, which drew over 100 youth. The event included a multimedia exhibit of all Beyondmedia programming, adult and youth panels and media advocacy stations where youth could create video letters and portrait postcards to Mayor Daley, Police Superintendent Jody Weis, CPS CEO Ron Huberman and local aldermen and principals, addressing the changes needed in their schools and neighborhoods to provide safer communities and learning environments.
