Music To Me Is...a short documentary written, filmed and produced by a group of high school youth in Chicago's East Garfield Park neighborhood. In this project, four of the members in Breakthrough Film Club share their thoughts and feelings about music and how music is used as a tool to combat anger, bullying and a means of self expression.
Access Living/Empowered Fe Fes Video 4
In their 4th video the Empowered Fe Fes & DIVAS explore using modern dance to express their views about domestic violence among women and girls with disabilities. The girls are taking ownership of this anti-violence project by selecting dance movements, dialogue, and music that keeps it real about their stories of pain and survival.

In honour of International Anti-Bullying Day, two schools came together to create a message about acceptance and challenge others to use social media as a positive tool. The Anti-bullying flashmob was 4 months in the making. It goes to show what two schools can do when we come together for a common theme - Acceptance and the use of Social Media to send this positive message. This is also a challenge to others out there to spread the anti-bullying message to others.

Between Friends-YCARE
The YCARE (Youth Creating Allies for Relationship Education) group wanted to make this PSA because they spent all summer learning about domestic violence and wanted to educate others about it along with providing resources for people who need help. All of the girls also worked on individual projects that they are using to educate others about teen dating violence. They did a newsletter, a poster, a zine, and developed a workshop on technology abuse.

Center on Halsted Video 1
Due to the drop-in nature of the youth center, we agreed to leave the process open-ended in order to invite as many voices as possible. We held four group meetings over four weeks for brainstorming and filming. The participants were invited to be on film or to simply engage in the dialogue. The video represents just one of these dialogues. Our group members represent the diversity of the center, including gay, straight, transgender, lesbian, Caucasian, African-American, Hispanic and various other people. Each groups’ discussions varied, but a consistent theme was that the LGBTQ community as a whole has experienced much gender-based violence in the form of verbal, emotional, physical and systemic acts. These personal stories indicate the violence that occurs when people step out of “traditional” gender roles in order to be true to themselves.

Dreamcatcher Video 1
The Dreamcatcher Foundation is an organization founded by two formerly incarcerated women who have spent much of their lives involved in the sex trade, Stephanie Daniels-Wilson and Brenda Myers-Powell. Dreamcatcher works with girls, aged 12-18, who live in Chicago’s Englewood community who are at high risk for incarceration and sexual exploitation.

Family Matters/BOND – Video 1
This video clip shows a speech, delivered by a young man, reviling statistics on domestic sexual violence against women and girls. The whole video revolves around the choices the young men face every day, particularly in regard to gangs and drugs. Creating the video provided opportunities for them to examine and discuss their views about drugs and gangs and to learn and/or hone a myriad of skills as they wrote the script, generated storyboards, created the original artwork and titles used in the video, scouted locations, and did the actual videography.

Our first video, “Domestic Violence”, is a PSA that encourages victims to take a stand against violence that happens in domestic situations. It includes student dramatizations and statistics. The slogan “Kill domestic violence before it kills you”, is a call-to-arms to take measures against violence and for women to recognize their own value and self-worth.

Our second video, titled “Molestation”, is a PSA urging victims of molestation to speak out and get help. The students make a direct appeal to the audience, saying those that are silenced about their experiences with molestation should take matters into their own hands and feel empowered to stand up for what is right.

A member of our group wrote a spoken word piece about Dating Violence and we turned it into a skit for the Chain of Change video. In the first skit, Part 1: The Mistake, a young woman falls in love with a guy who physically abuses her. In Part 2, the second skit, the same young woman talks about how it might feel if she became the abuser and her partner was the victim. This spoken word piece is called “What If?”

NUF Said: Insights on Violence
As participants of the NUF Said project (nuf-said.org), Leadership Council members created videos around the topic of crime & violence. The majority of the NUF SAID survey respondents felt they didn’t witness or weren’t involved in violence, abuse, harassment or discrimination on a frequent basis. Based on these responses, Beyondmedia youth interviewed their peers on how they define violence.

Rid Your Vocabulary Of Retarded
Youth Leadership Council member Nicole Zakheim created this video. She states: My school has had a lot of politically incorrect words banned, but we hadn't covered one that affects a lot of students, including myself. Retarded. I was hearing it way to much in the hallways, and it didn't make sense to me that the same kids who had banned words like "gay" from their vocabulary weren't stopping and thinking about "retarded". Giving a negative connotation to a word that applies to so many people is ignorant and I wanted to make sure that people were aware of what their words meant. I wrote, shot and edited this at my school. The people in the PSA are all students at my school, who all object to the wrong usage of "retarded."

What’s the point of loving?
CoBra youth created these videos to explore diverse types of violence in different contexts. The scenes depict environmental, physical, familial, social, societal and psychological violence. All, in the view of the youth, boil down to one thing: a lack of love.

The girl in the video is experiencing the same as she runs throughout a dark basement, hiding from an unknown force.
