Family Matters is a family-centered organization in the North of Howard neighborhood that seeks to be a catalyst for change – building and strengthening the community through programs that support personal growth and leadership. We are a safe, positive second home where families of diverse culture and experience come together and find equal acceptance, encouragement and challenge. We believe the community must determine its own needs and can meet those needs through a partnership comprising neighborhood residents, staff, volunteers and donors.

We encourage respect for self and others and practice three Principles of Leadership:

utilizing peaceful conflict resolution
embracing positive thinking and language
understanding choices and consequences
The teen girls of SOS (Sisters of Struggle) are self-defined activists who have chosen to focus on various types of violence against women in their work because of their own experiences. We are honored to participate in the Chain of Change project because it is a natural continuation of our work and because we want to stand in solidarity with other organizations making the statement that the violent treatment of women is intolerable.
