Youth Leadership Council member Nicole Zakheim created this video. She states: My school has had a lot of politically incorrect words banned, but we hadn't covered one that affects a lot of students, including myself. Retarded. I was hearing it way to much in the hallways, and it didn't make sense to me that the same kids who had banned words like "gay" from their vocabulary weren't stopping and thinking about "retarded". Giving a negative connotation to a word that applies to so many people is ignorant and I wanted to make sure that people were aware of what their words meant. I wrote, shot and edited this at my school. The people in the PSA are all students at my school, who all object to the wrong usage of "retarded."

As participants of the NUF Said project (nuf-said.org), Leadership Council members created videos around the topic of crime & violence. The majority of the NUF SAID survey respondents felt they didn’t witness or weren’t involved in violence, abuse, harassment or discrimination on a frequent basis. The CoC Youth Leadership Council act as peer representatives who co-facilitative workshops and screenings, outreach for the project, provide support to partners and shape the direction of CoC. Leaders articulate their views on violence and document the violence and anti-violence work that often goes unreported in mainstream media.

Leadership Council Member Accomplishments
Lynda Lopez has been hired as a youth reporter for the RedEye, won the University of Chicago 2011 Unsung Hero Award, was a finalist for the Balanced Student Excellence Award at U of C, landed a Tribune internship, and was accepted into the American Indian Journalism Institute this summer, and won 2nd place in the Newspaper Association of America Youth Content Awards for Feature Story.
Lynda Lopez and Beyondmedia received a $2,000 Local Reporting Award from Chicago Community Trust/Community News Matters to investigate cyberbullying among youth of color in Chicago and analyze mainstream coverage.
Beyondmedia Education is nominating Lynda Lopez for the Mario Savio Young Activist Award. The award winning youth receives $6,000 split between the youth and the organization, plus an all expenses paid trip to Berkeley, CA for the award ceremony.
Lynda Lopez and Tiara Epps will facilitate a Chain of Change media workshop at the Free Minds, Free People Conference in Rhode Island. In the workshop, 25 youth from across the country will produce a media piece to premiere at the August Youth Summit. (July 7-10)
Tiara made the honor roll with a 3.0 GPA and was selected to publish an article with Chicago Task Force.
Tiara Epps's NUF Said short video, Stereotypes of Young Black Men, was selected as one of the 10 finalists for a Youth Media Festival sponsored by the DC-based youth media group, Gandhi Brigade (www.gandhibrigade.org). (May 21)
