When people hear the word “violence,” images of physical attacks come into mind. From shootings to beatings, violence has somehow taken on a narrow definition in the general public. Violence does not only refer to physical acts towards another person. Violence is a word that means so much more.
The effects of the presence Crawford and Fisk Power Plants in Little Village and Pilsen is violence. The belittlement of women in the workplace is violence. The verbal abuse of an African American male because of the color of his skin is violence.
Through this blog, I want to start discussions about what violence means in different contexts and bring to light hidden issues that are not covered widely in the media. As a resident and student in Hyde Park, I am also going to write about the issues of violence in the community. Even though my connection to Hyde Park is strong, I will not neglect other neighborhoods in Chicago. I want to discuss instances of violence in other regions and spark insightful conversations.
In addition to writing about local issues, I want to broaden the scope and discuss national and, even, international acts of violence. From the wars in the Middle East to the gang wars in Mexico, there is a myriad of things that we can all be exposing our minds to.
