My girlfriend's next door neighbor, let's call her Aubrey, had a gang storm in her house, make a total wreck of everything inside, slash open her mattress, throw her on the ground, verbally abuse her, and threaten her with more brutality for talking back to them. This gang was the Pittsburgh police. They received a warrant to search her house for drugs. A nosy neighbor (we call this a "nebby neighbor" in Pgh) thought that Aubrey was drug dealing because she often had friends over late at night. The police searched through Aubrey's trash and found a small plastic bag. The judge took this a reason enough to sign a search warrant. When the police raided the house, they found nothing.

The truth is that Aubrey is a drug user. The truth is that she isn't hurting anyone but herself through her addictions. The truth is that the police brutalized her and violated her safe space on a very flimsy pretense. The truth that this kind of thing happens all the time. The truth is that we would not tolerate this kind of behavior from any other group of people than the police - but when they do it we're supposed to accept it.
