A 15-year-old student was shot and seriously wounded Tuesday as he left Hubbard High School, school officials said.

The shooting came on a day school was let out early because of final exams—and just a few days after fights were reported at the Southwest Side high school, students said.

The victim, a freshman, was walking near the rear of the school at 6200 S. Hamlin Ave. about 1 p.m. when he was shot in the back, Chicago Lawn District Sgt. Mike Mulligan said.

He was taken in serious to critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. Police said he was talking and stable at the scene.

Officials were not sure whether the teen was the intended target. Detectives are checking into the reports of fights last week to see whether they were connected to the shooting, police said.
