Over the course of the past weeks, I’ve been in and around the Capitol Square capturing as much of the story as possible with my camera. Historic and thrilling events are happening here in the Cheese state and I believe sharing these pictures from “on the ground” with those who may not be in Madison, or who may have seen only parts of the goings-on at the Capitol is essential. There is one photo of protesters camped out in the Rotunda that truly clung to my heart– this photo was taken at around 4:30 AM on Sunday morning, but people have been sleeping in the Capitol since Friday evening. They are embracing their First Amendment right to “peaceably assemble and petition the government” and are making sure their voices are heard. Wisconsin was “the birthplace of public sector unions” 50 years ago. Thus, the bill is an attack not only on Wisconsin’s workers, but on the rights of public workers across the country. I like to dedicate these photos to my father, who was a History teacher at East High.
