Beach violence alarms alderman

A North Side alderman is calling for police surveillance cameras along a stretch of beachfrom Oak Street to North Avenue to keep a lid on violence this summer.
"We just don't want any gang problems at the beach," said Ald. Vi Daley (43rd), whose lakefront ward includes North Avenue beach. "Beaches are there for people to enjoy, to play volleyball, swim and walk along the beach. We want to make sure it's a safe place for people to go.''

Cops: Dolton brothers tried to pimp teen girls

Twin brothers from south suburban Dolton were ordered held on $100,000 bond after they were accused of pimping two teenage girls, authorities said. Cook County sheriff's police uncovered the operation where Myrelle and Tyrelle Lockett used Internet ads to pimp two teenage girls, ages 17 and 18, according to court documents.

‘It shouldn’t be that easy’

Department officials estimate that about two-thirds of the 1,200 inmates in the state's eight juvenile justice facilities have been diagnosed with a mental illness and that half the young men and nearly all the young women have thought about or attempted suicide before they enter the system.

While it may be impossible to eliminate all suicide risks behind bars, the state has failed to take simple steps to protect these teenagers from themselves.

5 arrested in Near North Red Line robbery

Police were questioning five people in the overnight robbery of a man on a Red Line train on the Near North Side in what was being investigated as a possible hate crime.

One of them had the victim's cell phone on him when Public Transportation Section officers arrested the four juveniles and an adult as they tried to leave the Grand Avenue subway station a little after midnight, police said.

Chicago has come a long way

Tio Hardiman knows Chicago's killing fields better than most people. The director of CeaseFire Illinois keeps tabs on violent conflicts across the city. He and 120 workers broker truces -- sometimes literally getting between gunmen -- to stop the shooting.
So Hardiman's opinion on whether Chicago should allow the Illinois National Guard to safeguard the city carries some weight.

My girlfriend's next door neighbor, let's call her Aubrey, had a gang storm in her house, make a total wreck of everything inside, slash open her mattress, throw her on the ground, verbally abuse her, and threaten her with more brutality for talking back to them. This gang was the Pittsburgh police.
