Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month February, 2011

Since 2006, February has been observed as an important time to raise awareness about the serious issue of dating violence in high schools, colleges and communities across the nation. This year, there are many things that you can do to help raise awareness about dating abuse and violence.

School districts struggle to deal with dating violence among students

Simeon is one of many high schools in Illinois to come under fire for their handling of student sexual assaults and dating-related violence. There are no state laws or policies governing how school districts should respond to these sensitive issues. Administrators often face he-said, she-said cases in which no
criminal charges have been filed, and so they must balance protecting alleged victims versus the rights of the accused.

The study released today shines a light on a problem too often in the dark -- youth violence. Schools should be safe havens where
young people can learn and prosper, and anything less than that is unacceptable. We've met with students affected by the fatal
beating of Derrion Albert in Chicago and brought teens struggling with the issue of dating violence here to Washington.
