Tamara Lynch didn't perform in a local poetry slam contest last Wednesday for the money or the guaranteed job offered at a West Side McDonald¡¦s restaurant.
The Austin Business and Entrepreneurship Academy student did it because she enjoys writing poetry.

The beating death of 16-year-old Derrion Albert, caught on video Sept. 24, continues to affect communities throughout Chicago and the nation.
West Side pastors today announced an effort to try to bring something positive out of that tragedy and, at the same time, recognizing an important man in Derrion's life.

For six years, the “Stay in School Initiative" has provided life skills and tutoring programs for more than 7,500 Chicago Public Schools grammar and high school students. The initiative provides a monthly workshop at Exelon headquarters in downtown Chicago, and finances programs through long-standing community partners Youth Guidance, Centers for New Horizons and BUILD (Broader Urban Involvement and Leadership Development).
