Chain of Change Awareness Campaign

Youth activists and adult allies are invited to join Chain of Change by participating in a public art installation symbolizing a movement to end violence. In partnership with the Center for Community Arts Partnerships and Lawrence Minksy's Ad Agency class at Columbia College, Beyondmedia has created silicone "awareness" bracelets with the debossed words, "Youth Against Violence - ChainofChange.com," to raise awareness of the violence affecting young people in Chicago. These bracelets will be sold for $1 throughout Chicago at Chain of Change events and in select cities across the country.

Each time a bracelet is sold, a "receipt" will be generated, which includes the buyer's name, location, and a personal message relating to how violence has affected their life. These receipts will become a long paper chain, which will be installed at an outdoor venue near Columbia College. The "Wrap the Park in the Chain of Change" opening event will feature youth speakers, music and performance Spring 2011.

Bracelet Messages

  • "Youth have power and a voice."
    -Garden Grove, CA
  • "I feel that tobacco and drugs being spread around schools and among my friends is a form of violence. Drugs lead to violence and tobacco is just plain bad for your health"
    -Portage Park
  • "Me and my friends are growing up on the south side of Chicago. Sometimes I am scared to come outside of my house because of the violence in the neighborhood. The ironic thing is we all have a love for dancing and I feel if we had a good way to communicate and set aside our differences we can come together and make something positive with our talents."
    -Chicago Roseland Community
  • "The concern for violence is an epidemic! Violence has affected my life by noticing the people and their lifestyles. As a social justice advocate I am involved in Domestic Violence Awareness. "
    -Waukegan, IL
  • "Violence to me is fear. From the time I was young enough to remember, I was bullied and teased for having a disability which resulted in emotional trama, hospitalizations and a fear in this world of being me. I was afraid of going to school or even going outside. It wasn’t until Jesus himself made me apart of a group that can let me shine. I’m learning to be me."
    -Chatham
  • "Personally, I myself had not been bullied, but my little brother(9 years old) has experienced bullying around school, just because he is in special ed. That breaks my heart and I myself would like to encourage people that we are all equal humans."
    -Chicago, IL
  • "I’m in support of youth and am an advocate."
    -Albany Park/North Park
  • "Someone I knew was abused by her father, and she had the courage to speak up against it. It was the first time that I experienced violence."
    -Mt Prospect
  • "I will continue to fight violence against women."
    -Ukrainian Village
  • "You have to be considerate about the people who care about you. If you die because of cigarettes they are the ones who suffer the worst. "
    -Uptown
